I’m writing to make you aware of ongoing scams targeting individuals by attempting to gain access to personally identifiable information such as Social Security numbers, PINs, bank details, and other personal data. While data targeting is a constant threat, tax season always drives an increase in this activity, and it appears to be happening to clients across a number of accounting and financial management firms in the region.

First and foremost, know that my team will never request sensitive information via email or text messages. Additionally, before sharing any information on a phone call with any of our staff, we want you to be confident of who you’re speaking with. To that end, we will work with you to ensure you’re comfortable regarding the security of your data before the exchange of any personally identifiable information. I can assure you we will not be offended if you’re cautious. In fact, we’d prefer it.

We may ask that you digitally sign your return or other documents using DocuSign®. In those instances, we will inform you of that request ahead of time. DocuSign requests related to the services we provide will only come from a staff member at Petro & Co PLLC and that will be reflected in the “From” line of the email. If you aren’t sure, don’t hesitate to call our office to confirm the request is from a member of my team.

If you receive a call requesting any personal information, or if you’re simply unsure if the person you’re speaking with is a member of my staff, hang up and call our office. We will determine if the person you were speaking to was actually a member of our staff and proceed from there.

Remember, if you receive any unsolicited communication asking for this type of information, especially via email or a text message, DO NOT respond or click on any links. Instead, contact us directly using the official contact details listed on our website, www.petrocpa.net.
